An oral analgesic is not necessary because the child is not experiencing throat pain. The child may not be able to take fluids orally at this time. Intravenous therapy could be indicated to maintain adequate hydration and thin respiratory secretions. The child is experiencing air hunger and will not be able to take long slow breaths.
