Answer to Question 1

B
Feedback
A With the neonate's first breath, gas exchange is transferred from the placenta to
the lungs. The separation of the fetus from the umbilical cord does not contribute
to the establishment of neonatal circulation.
B In the normal neonate, fetal shunts functionally close in response to pressure
changes in the systemic and pulmonary circulations and to increased oxygen
content. This process may take several days to complete.
C The fetal shunts normally close within several days of birth.
D Fetal shunts normally close soon after birth but may take several days.

Answer to Question 2

D
Feedback
A Insertion of an oral airway during seizure activity is no longer the standard of
care. The nurse should attempt to keep the airway patent by turning the patient's
head to the side to prevent aspiration.
B Once the seizure has ended, it may be necessary to suction the patient's mouth.
C Oxygen would be administered after the convulsion has ended.
D If a patient becomes eclamptic, the nurse should stay with her and call for help.
Nursing actions during a convulsion are directed towards ensuring a patent
airway and patient safety.
