A Parents are taught signs of strangulation; vomiting, pain, and an irreducible mass
in the abdomen. The physician should be contacted immediately if strangulation
is suspected.

Bleeding and cramping are normal after the procedure and will last for 1 to 2 weeks.
Sanitary pads should be used rather than a tampon for the first week after an abortion to
prevent infection. Other necessary health teaching that should be done includes the
following: no intercourse for the first week; no douching for the first week, or perhaps not
at all; temperature evaluation twice per day to identify infection; follow-up appointment in
2 weeks; and no strenuous work for a few days.
