Approximately one third of women with primary CMV infection transmit the virus to the
fetus. The prevalence is one in 150 live births. Only 10 of infected newborns go on to
manifest symptoms. These include jaundice, lethargy, seizures, petechiae, respiratory
distress, enlarged liver, and microcephaly.
