Visual jaundice in the neonate less than 24 hours old is descriptive of pathologic jaundice. Jaundice that occurs after 24 hours following births usually is physiologic jaundice. Direct serum bilirubin concentration of 0.4 mg/dL 24 hours after birth and visible jaundice of a 1-week-old breastfeeding infant are descriptive of physiologic jaundice.
