Therefore, additional information and more specific determinations need to be done before any conclusion can be made. Down syndrome is associated with decreased maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein levels. This type of testing provides no information about the acidbase status of the fetus. Immediate termination is not warranted; more information is needed.
