Answer to Question 1

1
Rationale 1: If the setting is new to the adolescent, explain the procedures and introduce personnel so the adolescent feels more at ease.
Rationale 2: Adolescents usually will offer their opinions readily.
Rationale 3: It is important that adolescents feel welcome, important, and unrushed, in order to gain their trust.
Rationale 4: When adolescents are visiting the same office or clinic that they came to during childhood, they usually know and feel comfortable with the care providers. This is not the case if it is a first visit.

Answer to Question 2

4

Rationale:
1. A school-age child will not remember or really care about hearing the risks of smoking.
2. Smoking occasionally will hurt the child's health, so this response is inappropriate.
3. The school-age child wants to be like his peers, and won't just tell friends no without a justification.
4. When teaching about smoking, providing a model of lungs and having the child breathe through a straw demonstrate the effects of airway narrowing. This makes the effects much more realistic.
