Infection is a major complication of ventriculoperitonea l shunts. Observation for signs of infection is a priority nursing intervention. Intake and output should be measured carefully. Abdominal distention could be a sign of peritonitis or a postoperative ileus. Pumping the shunt reservoir, administering sedation, and maintaining Trendelenburg position are not interventions associated with this condition.
