The major disadvantage to using general anesthesia for a cesarean birth is the potential for:

  b. Neonatal respiratory distress

Because the general anesthesia crosses the placental barrier, the fetus, as well as the mother, will be anesthetized. This may require more vigorous resuscitation of the newborn.
