Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
Newborns are prone to heat loss because they have a large body surface area in relation to their weight. Their skin is thin, blood vessels are close to the surface, and there is little subcutaneous fat for insulation.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: C
A newborn normally loses as much as 10 of its body weight in the first few days of life. For example: 8 lbs, 2 oz = 130 oz (16 oz = 1 lb; so 8 lbs  16 oz = 128 oz + 2 oz = 130 oz). Ten percent of 130 = 13 oz. (Or, 10 of 3685 g = 368 g.)

Your skin wrinkles if you stay in the bathtub a long time because the outermost layer of skin (which consists of dead keratin) swells when it absorbs water. It is tightly attached to the skin below it, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling. This happens to the hands and feet because they have the thickest layer of dead keratin cells.
