Many things can cause stress in the child admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit, including sensory overload from light, noise, and pain. Communication barriers also cause stress in these patients. Consistent sleep hours help decrease stress.

The safe dose range for propofol is 25-50 g/kg/minute, so this dose is acceptable. The nurse should administer the drug using an infusion pump. It is not necessary to check whether the drug is given as an infusion, nor is it necessary to notify the provider that the dose is out of range. Propofol is a short-acting drug with a limited half-life and has no antidote.
