Jerking movements may occur during crying as the infant discharges energy. When offending stimulation is removed, infants tend to fall back to sleep. Quiet motor activity occurs during the wide-awake state. Stimulation increases motor activity in the active alert state.

Hypoxia causes blood oxygen levels (PO2) and pH to drop. Subsequently, blood carbon dioxide levels (PCO2) begin to rise and prompt the respiratory center within the medulla to initiate breathing.
