Planned comparisons are different from post-hoc comparisons in multiple ways. (1) A planned comparison is appropriate when hypotheses exist specifying the specific combination(s) of effects that are associated with the dependent variable. (2) The analyst only tests the combinations specifically referred to in a hypothesis.
