The point is to get players to think about the broader market, rather than only optimizing their own needs. While it may seem counterintuitive at first, and it is important to avoid collusion or even the appearance of it, the point is to find a solution to avoid price wars. Mutual cooperation can yield even better outcomes than both parties acting selfishly on their own accord. Go figure.
