Answer to Question 1

Pay-for-performance is a form of trade allowance that rewards retailers for performing the primary function that justifies a manufacturer offering a trade allowance, namely, selling increased quantities of the manufacturer's brand to consumers. These programs are designed to reward retailers for selling the manufacturer's brand supported with a trade allowance rather than for merely buying the brand at off-invoice prices. In theory, everyone wins with these types of programs because manufacturers compensate retailers only for those items that are sold to consumers at discounted prices. However, these types of programs are embraced more heartily by manufacturers than by retailers because retailers do not win as much as they do with gain without pain off-invoice programs that offer rewards and require no effort other than placing an order.
