Cindy could not believe what she saw as she walked past the open door of the office she shared with another sales representative, Marvin. Marvin appeared to be digging through her trashcan. Initially she thought, How strange.. Then she realized that she had thrown notes about key prospects in to her trashcan. Could it be that her colleague was going through her trash to generate leads for himself? Marvin was the number one representative in the company and the darling of the sales manager. Cindy thought to herself, What should I do now?

Is there anything Cindy can do in the future to protect herself from Marvin's spying?

Answer to Question 1

To protect herself, and her company, Cindy needs to shred all important documents (see suggested websites on corporate theft via garbage). If Marvin steals Cindy's leads, it is detrimental to Cindy; if a competitor steals Cindy's leads it is detrimental to the company.

Answer to Question 2

Before she goes to the sales manager, Cindy should probably have more substantial evidence than just an observation. If Marvin truly is the sales manager's darling, the sales manager is likely to defend him. She might want to see if other sales representatives have noticed anything unusual about Marvin's behavior in the past or had similar incidents.
