Answer to Question 1

Adam Smith's 1776 book An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations argued against mercantilism. His arguments were based on the economic idea that free trade increases the total number of goods and services produced by having individuals specialize in areas where they have an advantage. Allowing free trade is also seen as a way for exporting countries to import more products. Exporters should be able to increase their wealth, allowing them to purchase more imported goods.
