B. Since Congress updated the Copyright laws in 1989, a copyright attaches to the work the instant it is created. The author does not have to register the work, file it with any public agency, attach a notice, or say any magic words. The moment the original work is fixed in a tangible form of expression the author's legal rights come into being.
