Answer to Question 1

If you don't research salaries, you may price yourself out of a job, or you may eventually learn that your salary could have been higher. You may jeopardize your job offer if you don't appear knowledgeable about the position, the industry, the organization, the work involved, and the average salary.

Answer to Question 2

If the topic of salary comes up earlier, the interviewer's focus could shift too far away from your qualifications. You should first concentrate on what the employer will gain (your qualifications and skills) before focusing on the price (your compensation). Delaying the salary discussion also shows the interviewer that you are interested in the job and not merely in the compensation.
