Pretesting involves trial runs using the survey instrument with a group of colleagues or actual respondents to iron out fundamental problems in instructions, items, or design of a questionnaire. Researchers benefit by spotting problems in the pretest and rightly inferring that a problem with this very small sample will likely be a problem in the full sample once data collection actually begins.
