Answer to Question 1

The three courses of action to control extraneous variables include 1) holding extraneous variables constant where practical, 2) assigning treatments to test units randomly, and 3) using experimental designs that control for the effects of extraneous variables. If an extraneous variable confounds the experiment, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) can be used to statistically de-bias the dependent variable by accounting for it separately within each of the levels of the confounding variable.
