Other reasons for variables to be correlated include reverse causation, omitted variables, and insufficient variation. Student examples will vary. One example of a causal statement is Positive attitudes toward the brand caused an increase in sales.. Reverse causation for this would be the increase in sales causing positive attitudes toward the brand; omitted variables could be that the product design was improved during the period of measurement; insufficient variation would be that attitudes improved, but not enough to account for the sales increase.
