The common coinage ensured that business transactions could be carried out easily throughout the empire. The immense growth of the Roman Empire occurred through the linkages of business rather than through the marching of its legions and warfare. When the outside tribes attacked the empire, the Roman empire was already substantially weakened, because former allies no longer saw any advantage in being associated with the Romans and willingly cooperated with the invaders.
