MERCOSUR started as a bilateral agreement between Brazil and Argentina aimed at eliminating trade restrictions between the two countries. MERCOSUR now comprises two additional member countries: Paraguay and Uruguay. Two other members, Chile and Bolivia, have a pending status. This may be found in the Common Markets section (4-2d).
