Why are there more than two treatment levels in a one factor repeated measures design?

Certain complex relationships between variables cannot be discovered if there are only two levels of the independent variable; for example if responding increases at first and later declines with increasing levels of the independent variable, at leas three levels would be needed to demonstrate the relationship.
