The dependent variable is the presumed effect. It is what is measured by the experimenter. In this case, the experimenter is measuring memory, which is expected to change as exposure times change.

Answer to Question 2

A
The independent variable is the one manipulated by the experimenter. It is the presumed cause that will affect the dependent variable. In this case different exposure times should cause changes in memory for pictures.
