The percentage of U.S. adults with a high school diploma has changed dramatically since 1940 . In 1940, 24.1 percent of adults had a high school diploma. That number had increased to 84.1 percent by the year 2000 . In terms of the percentage of U.S. adults with at least a college degree, that increased from under 5 percent in 1940 to over 25 percent in 2000 . Expenditures per pupil increased nearly sevenfold from 1940 to 2000, even after adjusting for inflation.
