Legitimation refers to the process by which inequality comes to be viewed as a legitimate or acceptable structure. It is important because social stratification could not continue to exist if it were not viewed as legitimate by most of the people affected by it. Legitimation begins during the process of socialization. Members of society internalize an understanding of their social location and this affects their self-esteem.
