Answer to Question 1

The two primary sources are the FBI's Uniform Crime Report (compiled from data provided by police departments around the country) and the National Crime Victimization Survey, prepared by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The NCVS uses surveys to obtain its data directly from victims of crime.
