Tnnies, Durkheim, and Redfield identified many of the same characteristics in preindustrial and industrial societies, but called them different things. Gemeinschaft, mechanical solidarity, and folk society all describe a society that has strong personal ties, consensus about many things, and is family oriented. On the other hand, gesellschaft, organic solidarity, and urban society refer to societies that do not have such close ties, are more secular, have a complex division of labor, and are less family-oriented than their earlier counterparts.
