Because she did not teach in a university, Jane Addams was not considered a sociologist during her lifetime. No doubt due to the fact that she was a woman, and that she worked for social reform directly with the poor, she was considered a social worker.

Weber felt that sociologists should not let their own personal biases affect the research process. He stressed that researchers should stay neutral and objective, or value-free..
