Answer to Question 1

Structural-functionalists would argue that there is a short supply of persons who have the talent and ability to become physicians and an even shorter supply of those with the ability to become surgeons. Being a physician involves a significant investment of time and money.

Answer to Question 2

Some believe that the greater social stress of living a lower-class life may cause mental illness, while others believe that the onset of mental illness may cause people to lose their jobs and move downwards in the social classes.
