Differential association is a term coined by Edwin Sutherland.From the different groups we associate with, we learn to deviate from, or conform to, society's norms.We may get mixed messages, but we end up with more of one kind of message than the other.Consequently, we tilt in one direction (conformity) or the other (deviance).

Gender orientation is firmly imbedded in our parents.They teach gender primarily without even being aware that they are doing it.
