Answer to Question 1

One-half of all the plant species on the earth grow in the rain forests. As these forests are cut down, many of these species become extinct. Western scientists have not studied many of these plant species and have no knowledge of the potential medical or nutritional value these plants may have had for people. Native tribes are also becoming extinct with the clearing of the rain forests. These tribal groups possess intricate forms of social organization and knowledge they have acquired over thousands of years. Their extinction results in the loss of this knowledge.
