Answer to Question 1

The five types of urban dwellers that Gans identifies include: cosmopolites, singles, ethnic villagers, the deprived, and the trapped. They experience urban life differently because their reasons for living in the city differ. Cosmopolites, singles, and ethnic villagers all choose to live in the city for various reasons and usually find a sense of community. The majority of those who feel alienation are from the deprived and the trapped urban dwellers. They have little choice about where they live and are outcasts of a post-industrial society.

Answer to Question 2

It increased a woman's mobility, allowing her to leave the home and shop.
