Answer to Question 1

The community college movement was designed to develop a system of local colleges accessible to the average high school student. Originally called junior colleges, vocational preparation was often the emphasis of these schools. They also provided the same general education courses a student would take in the first two years of attending a four-year university. Community colleges are usually less expensive than four year schools, even state-funded schools. Their course offerings are also more accessible to nontraditional students. Whether or not the quality of the education received at the community college is equal to that received at a four year school may be debated.

Answer to Question 2

Functionalists believe good health is required so that people can perform their normal duties. In view of this, society must set up ways to control sickness. The way they do this is establish a system of medical care and make rules that help keep too many people from being sick. They do this by regulating illness through the concept of the sick role. Conflict theorists see health care as a scarce resource over which there is a struggle. Quality medical care increases life expectancy as well as power. The rich and powerful monopolize medicine in their effort to control it.

Every flu season is different, and even healthy people can get extremely sick from the flu, as well as spread it to others. The flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Every person over six months of age should get an annual flu vaccine. The vaccine cannot cause you to get influenza, but in some seasons, may not be completely able to prevent you from acquiring influenza due to changes in causative viruses. The viruses in the flu shot are killed—there is no way they can give you the flu. Minor side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given. It is possible to develop a slight fever, and body aches, but these are simply signs that the body is responding to the vaccine and making itself ready to fight off the influenza virus should you come in contact with it.
