Medicalization is the process by which a human condition or circumstance comes to be defined and treated as a medical condition. This is what has happened to the birthing process in the United States. Obstetricians took much more interventionist measures for dealing with women's pregnancies, resulting in this natural process being treated more and more like a medical condition that needed treatment.
