Sociologists have found that immigrants follow one of several possible pathways to assimilation. One path is the traditional trajectory of upward mobility and cultural assimilation into the mainstream. But another increasingly prominent path involves downward economic mobility and assimilation into the urban poor. A third path for immigrants is to integrate into the economic mainstream while sustaining ties to the culture in the origin community by remaining within residential enclaves.
