Answer to Question 1

Functionalists stress that to survive a society must fulfill basic functions. Family provides many of these needs including economic production, socialization of children care of the sick and aged recreation, sexual control, and reproduction. Conflict theorists view conflict as a part of marriage with the purpose of this conflict being either the husband or wife holding the upper hand in decision making and financial control. The reason for the power struggle is so the successful party can manipulate the family for his or her maximum benefit. Symbolic interactionists look at tradition and what each member of the family perceives as being women's (wives') work, men's (husband's) work, and children's work. In symbolic interactionism, there are no firm boundaries because it is how the couple agrees upon what the symbols of the family mean. These symbols are always subject to a change in meaning.

Answer to Question 2
