Broadly conceived, a family consists of two or more people who consider themselves related by blood, marriage or adoption. Both marriage and family are used to establish patterns of mate selection, to trace descent, and to determine inheritance and authority.

Stage 1: high birth rates and high death rates;
Stage 2: high birth rates, lower death rates;
Stage 3: lower birth rates, lower death rates;
Stage 4: lower birth rates, slightly higher death rates
