Only twice have nuclear weapons been used in war. In 1945, at the conclusion of World War II, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan.
The arms race that followed World War II led the United States and the Soviet Union to build large arsenals of nuclear weapons. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russian Federation and the United States gradually reduced their nuclear arsenals.
Nuclear proliferation (the acquisition of nuclear weapon technology by more and more nations) increases the likelihood that regional conflicts could trigger the use of nuclear weapons. The use of such weapons would not only cause a huge number of casualties but also could very well draw other nations into the conflict.
