 Colonial Villages (15651800): The first cities were created by Europeans who colonized what they called the New World.
 Westward Expansion (18001860): People began pushing westward, following new transportation routes. Steady urbanization saw the movement of people from the countryside to cities.
 The Industrial Metropolis (18601950): A mix of factories and surging immigrant population created the industrial metropolis. New train and trolley routes allowed city boundaries to move into the surrounding countryside.
 Postindustrial Cities and Suburbs (1950Present): Post WWII baby boom and new interstate highways attracted people to suburbs.
