 High-income nations tend to enjoy low infant mortality, high life expectancy, and better health care options. Longer lifespans mean a greater tendency to chronic diseases. Not everyone in a high-income nation is affluent, however, so poverty still affects health.
 Low-income nations tend to have illnesses associated with poverty, poor nutrition, unsafe drinking water, and lack of access to medical care and preventative treatment. People are more likely to die of acute diseases.

In practice, this means that individuals purchase health care according to their particular needs and personal resources.
