Those who favor legalizing prostitution argue that this activity is a victimless crime and that what goes on between consenting adults in private should not be a matter of legal enforcement. Another argument in favor of legalizing prostitution is that illegal prostitution causes problems such as the spread of venereal disease and AIDS and may come under the control of organized crime. It also leads to other related crimes, such as assaults on customers and the use of drugs.

The Internet has transformed many industries, including the sex trade. Prostitutes now utilize the Internet to advertise themselves and arrange meetings with customers. For the modest cost of a device with an Internet connection, a prostitute can be in business: contacting customers through a website or online ad service.
