Answer to Question 1

Industrial societies, with a complex technology and an elaborate division of labor, need a highly educated and well-trained workforce. Thus, training and education must be more extensive than in preindustrial societies.

Answer to Question 2

Biology plays an important role in the life course, especially at the beginning and the end. As infants and young children, people are highly dependent on others for their survival, and thus the statuses that are open to them are limited. In very old age, physical deterioration may limit their capabilities and again make them dependent on others. Society cannot rely on people during these periods to the extent that it can during other stages of the life span.
