After the abolition of slavery, African Americans experienced decades of severe oppression during which it was difficult for black families to advance from poverty. American Indians have confronted some unique problems in the form of the reservation system and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), which were intended to work for the benefit of Indians but seem instead to have worked to their disadvantage.
