Answer to Question 1

It is difficult to estimate the number of couples in cohabiting relationships, because it is not easy to clearly define exactly who is cohabiting, and such relationships can change rapidly. Censuses on the number of households with two unrelated adults of the opposite sex sharing the same household also include roommates and those who are not in a relationship.

Answer to Question 2

Traditional norms in many subcultures support male domination in marriage. In fact, men with traditional, or nonegalitarian, views toward sex-role relationships are more likely to approve of using violence against a spouse and are more likely to have actually used severe violence against their own spouses.
