An intoxicated patient has suffered a burn to his left lateral thigh after passing out with his leg touching the side of a kerosene heater. Close examination of the burn reveals tough leathery tissue in the center of the burn with red skin with blisters surrounding it. Regarding the burn, which one of the following is true?
