What effect does aging have on myocardial reserve capacity? What effect does this have on volume resuscitation of the older trauma patient?

Myocardial reserve capacity decreases. The elderly develop volume overload more easily than younger patients. Volume resuscitation must be carried out cautiously with careful monitoring for signs of overload, particularly pulmonary edema.
