You are called to see a 3-year-old child who is in moderate respiratory distress. His mother says that he has appeared well during the day, but for the past two nights, he has been waking up around midnight with a high-pitched cough that sounds like a dog barking. You find the child lying in bed, looking very tired and miserable. Axillary temperature is 99.7F. Respirations are stridorous at 30/min, with suprasternal retractions and accessory muscle use. On auscultation of the chest, no wheezing or crackles are heard. All of the following would be included in the management of this patient EXCEPT:
